    Numerical Simulation of Fragment Separation during Rock Cutting Using a 3D Dynamic Finite Element Analysis Code

    To predict fragment separation during rock cutting, previous studies on rock cutting interactions using simulation approaches, experimental tests, and theoretical methods were considered in detail. This study used the numerical code LS-DYNA (3D) to numerically simulate fragment separation. In the simulations, a damage material model and erosion criteria were used for the base rock, and the conical pick was designated a rigid material. The conical pick moved at varying linear speeds to cut the fixed base rock. For a given linear speed of the conical pick, numerical studies were performed for various cutting depths and mechanical properties of rock. The numerical simulation results demonstrated that the cutting forces and sizes of the separated fragments increased significantly with increasing cutting depth, compressive strength, and elastic modulus of the base rock. A strong linear relationship was observed between the mean peak cutting forces obtained from the numerical, theoretical, and experimental studies with correlation coefficients of 0.698, 0.8111, 0.868, and 0.768. The simulation results also showed an exponential relationship between the specific energy and cutting depth and a linear relationship between the specific energy and compressive strength.     Influence of AC voltage on the positive DC corona current pulses in a wire-cylinder gap View Document

    In the development of hybrid HVDC and HVAC transmission lines, the study of radio interference is an important issue. Positive corona current pulses from high voltage transmission lines are the main source of radio interference. In this paper, the design of a wire-cylinder gap electrode system is presented to study the influence of AC voltage on the characteristics of positive corona current pulses. The study shows that the mode of the current pulses is different from that of either DC or AC corona discharge. Waveform parameters of the pulses, such as rise time, half wave time, duration time, repetition rates, average amplitude, and time intervals of secondary pulses are all statistically analyzed in this study. The empirical formulas for the repetition rates with different AC voltages are presented. A theoretical explanation based on an ion cloud model is given to reveal the mechanism behind the influence of AC voltage on positive corona discharge. The experimental results could provide some references for the prediction of radio interference from hybrid AC/DC transmission lines

    High Capacity Mode Division Multiplexing Based MIMO Enabled All-Optical Analog Millimeter-Wave Over Fiber Fronthaul Architecture for 5G and Beyond

    The ever-increasing proliferation of mobile users and new technologies, and the demands for ubiquitous connectivity, high data capacity, faster data speed, low latency, and reliable services have been driven the quest for the next generation, fifth generation (5G), of the wireless networks. Cloud radio access network (C-RAN) has been identified as a promising architecture for addressing 5G requirements. However, C-RAN enforces stringent requirements on the fronthaul capacity and latency. To this end, several fronthaul solutions have been proposed in the literature, ranging from transporting digitized radio signals over fiber and functional splits to an entirely analog-radio-over fiber (A-RoF) based fronthual. A-RoF is a highly appealing transport solution for fronthual of 5G and beyond owing to its high bandwidth and energy efficiency, low system complexity, small footprint, cost-effectiveness, and low latency. In this paper, a high capacity multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) enabled all-optical analog-millimeter-wave-over fiber (A-MMWoF) fronthaul architecture is proposed for 5G and beyond of wireless networks. The proposed architecture employs photonic MMW signals generation and mode division multiplexing (MDM) along with wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) for transporting MMW MIMO signals in the optical domain. In support of the proposed architecture design, a comprehensive state-of-the-art literature review on the recent research works in high capacity A-RoF fronthaul systems and related transport technologies is presented. In addition, the corresponding potential challenges and solutions along with potential future directions are highlighted.     Nanocomposite hydrogel fibers in the field of diagnosis and treatment

    In the past few decades, many researchers have focused their research interests on nanocomposite hydrogel fibers (NHFs). These practitioners have developed and optimized techniques for preparing nanofiber membranes such as the template method, microfluidic spinning, electrospinning, wet spinning and three-dimensional printing (3D printing). NHFs have important applications in wearable monitoring, diagnosis and nursing due to their various excellent properties (such as high-water content, porous morphology, flexibility, braiding and rich active functional groups). In this paper, the latest progress of NHFs in pose monitoring, continuous monitoring of physiological indicators, diagnosis, wearables, nursing, drug delivery and dressings are reviewed. This paper also aims to review their key operational parameters, advantages and disadvantages of NHFs in the above fields, including sensitivity, working range and other special properties. Specifically, NHFs can be used for continuous monitoring of biological postures (such as gestures) or physiological indicators (such as blood sugar) in vitro and in vivo. NHFs also can be used for long-term monitoring of related indicators in the wearable field. NHFs can be used in tissue engineering and drug delivery. Finally, we look forward to the development prospects, challenges and opportunities of the next generation of NHFs. We confirm that the emergence of NHFs in the field of diagnosis and treatment has opened up a new vision for human health.     MetaBEV: Solving Sensor Failures for BEV Detection and Map Segmentation

    Perception systems in modern autonomous driving vehicles typically take inputs from complementary multi-modal sensors, e.g., LiDAR and cameras. However, in real-world applications, sensor corruptions and failures lead to inferior performances, thus compromising autonomous safety. In this paper, we propose a robust framework, called MetaBEV, to address extreme real-world environments involving overall six sensor corruptions and two extreme sensor-missing situations. In MetaBEV, signals from multiple sensors are first processed by modal-specific encoders. Subsequently, a set of dense BEV queries are initialized, termed meta-BEV. These queries are then processed iteratively by a BEV-Evolving decoder, which selectively aggregates deep features from either LiDAR, cameras, or both modalities. The updated BEV representations are further leveraged for multiple 3D prediction tasks. Additionally, we introduce a new M2oE structure to alleviate the performance drop on distinct tasks in multi-task joint learning. Finally, MetaBEV is evaluated on the nuScenes dataset with 3D object detection and BEV map segmentation tasks. Experiments show MetaBEV outperforms prior arts by a large margin on both full and corrupted modalities. For instance, when the LiDAR signal is missing, MetaBEV improves 35.5% detection NDS and 17.7% segmentation mIoU upon the vanilla BEVFusion model; and when the camera signal is absent, MetaBEV still achieves 69.2% NDS and 53.7% mIoU, which is even higher than previous works that perform on full-modalities. Moreover, MetaBEV performs fairly against previous methods in both canonical perception and multi-task learning settings, refreshing state-of-the-art nuScenes BEV map segmentation with 70.4% mIoU.Comment: Project page: https://chongjiange.github.io/metabev.htm

    Origins and stepwise expansion of R2R3-MYB transcription factors for the terrestrial adaptation of plants

    The R2R3-MYB transcription factors play critical roles in various processes in embryophytes (land plants). Here, we identified genes encoding R2R3-MYB proteins from rhodophytes, glaucophytes, Chromista, chlorophytes, charophytes, and embryophytes. We classified the R2R3-MYB genes into three subgroups (I, II, and III) based on their evolutionary history and gene structure. The subgroup I is the most ancient group that includes members from all plant lineages. The subgroup II was formed before the divergence of charophytes and embryophytes. The subgroup III genes form a monophyletic group and only comprise members from land plants with conserved exon–intron structure. Each subgroup was further divided into multiple clades. The subgroup I can be divided into I-A, I-B, I-C, and I-D. The I-A, I-B, and I-C are the most basal clades that have originated before the divergence of Archaeplastida. The I-D with the II and III subgroups form a monophyletic group, containing only green plants. The II and III subgroups form another monophyletic group with Streptophyta only. Once on land, the subgroup III genes have experienced two rounds of major expansions. The first round occurred before the origin of land plants, and the second round occurred after the divergence of land plants. Due to significant gene expansion, the subgroup III genes have become the predominant group of R2R3-MYBs in land plants. The highly unbalanced pattern of birth and death evolution of R2R3-MYB genes indicates their important roles in the successful adaptation and massive radiation of land plants to occupy a multitude of terrestrial environments

    Pax3/7BP Is a Pax7- and Pax3-Binding Protein that Regulates the Proliferation of Muscle Precursor Cells by an Epigenetic Mechanism

    SummaryIn mouse skeletal muscles, Pax7 uniquely marks muscle satellite cells and plays some important yet unknown functions at the perinatal stage. To elucidate its in vivo functions, we initiated a yeast two-hybrid screening to look for Pax7-interacting proteins and identified a previously uncharacterized Pax7- and Pax3-binding protein (Pax3/7BP). Pax3/7BP is a ubiquitously expressed nuclear protein, enriched in Pax7+ muscle precursor cells (MPCs), and serves as an indispensable adaptor for Pax7 to recruit the histone 3 lysine 4 (H3K4) methyltransferase (HMT) complex by bridging Pax7 and Wdr5. Knockdown of Pax3/7BP abolished the Pax3/7-associated H3K4 HMT activity and inhibited the proliferation of Pax7+ MPCs from young mice both in culture and in vivo. Id3 and Cdc20 were direct target genes of Pax7 and Pax3/7BP involved in the proliferation of Pax7+ MPCs. Collectively, our work establishes Pax3/7BP as an essential adaptor linking Pax3/7 with the H3K4 HMT to regulate the proliferation of MPCs

    A Review of Modeling and Control of Piezoelectric Stick-Slip Actuators

    Piezoelectric stick-slip actuators with high precision, large actuating force, and high displacement resolution are currently widely used in the field of high-precision micro-nano processing and manufacturing. However, the non-negligible, non-linear factors and complexity of their characteristics make its modeling and control quite difficult and affect the positioning accuracy and stability of the system. To obtain higher positioning accuracy and efficiency, modeling and control of piezoelectric stick-slip actuators are meaningful and necessary. Firstly, according to the working principle of stick-slip drive, this paper introduces the sub-models with different characteristics, such as hysteresis, dynamics, and friction, and presents the comprehensive modeling representative piezoelectric stick-slip actuators. Next, the control approaches suggested by different scholars are also summarized. Appropriate control strategies are adopted to reduce its tracking error and position error in response to the influence of various factors. Lastly, future research and application prospects in modeling and control are pointed out
